Julie Murphy - Retrospective 2LP
"Retrospective" is a double album in a gatefold sleeve, vinyl-only release. It’s a limited edition of 300 and there will only be one pressing. There will be no download version.
In Julie's own words:
"Earlier this year, when the seeds of the idea for a compilation album began to germinate, Ceri put an old cassette marked 'Julie and Ceri 1987’ in a tape player and we listened transfixed to the sound of our young selves coming out of the speakers. It was also the sound of the clunk of a button on a reel to reel tape machine and the alchemy and warmth of magnetic tape.
"Also the urgency of youth, the excitement and innocence of a new discovery. Willie of Winsbury was the obvious way to start the album which moves through four roughly chronological periods of music making over thirty years. It includes work with Fernhill, other musical collaborations and my own songwriting. The first two tracks are not available anywhere else.
"This is not a 'best of’ but a snapshot of a continuing artistic journey.
"It’s been a moving and fascinating experience putting this together, it was especially emotional listening back to the completed four sides for the first time. Some of the people in the songs or involved in the recordings are no longer here. They all passed before my eyes while I was listening.
"Why vinyl? Well, it’s an artefact in an age when recorded music has become so throw away. A vinyl is something to keep and engage with physically in real time. And I realised that I’d never made one before even though it’s a way I often listen to music."

"Yn gynharach eleni, pan ddechreuodd hadau y syniad am albwm casgliad egino, rhoddodd Ceri hen gasét wedi'i farcio 'Julie and Ceri 1987' mewn chwaraewr tâp ac fe wnaethon ni wrando, wedi’n hudo, ar sŵn ein hunain ifanc yn dod allan o'r ‘speakers’. Yno hefyd oedd sŵn ‘clunk’ botwm ar beiriant tâp rîl i rîl ac alcemi a chynhesrwydd tâp magnetig.
"Yno hefyd roedd asbri ieuenctid, cyffro a diniweidrwydd darganfyddiad newydd. Willie of Winsbury oedd y ffordd amlwg o ddechrau'r albwm sy'n symud trwy bedwar cyfnod cronolegol o greu cerddoriaeth dros ddeng mlynedd ar hugain. Mae'n cynnwys gwaith gyda fernhill, cydweithrediadau cerddorol eraill a fy nghyfansoddiadau fy hun. Nid yw'r ddau drac cyntaf ar gael yn unman arall.
"Nid 'best of' yw hwn ond ciplun o daith artistig barhaus.
"Mae wedi bod yn brofiad teimladwy a diddorol rhoi hyn at ei gilydd, roedd yn arbennig o emosiynol gwrando yn ôl ar y pedair ochr yn eu chrynswth am y tro cyntaf. Nid yw rhai o'r bobl yn y caneuon neu sy'n rhan o'r recordiadau yma mwyach. Maent i gyd wedi pasio o flaen fy llygaid tra roeddwn i'n gwrando yn ôl.
"Pam finyl? Wel, mae'n arteffact mewn oes pan mae cerddoriaeth wedi'i recordio wedi dod mor ‘daflu i ffwrdd’. Mae finyl yn rhywbeth diriaethol i'w gadw ac ymgysylltu gyda yn gorfforol mewn amser real. Sylweddolais hefyd nad oeddwn i erioed wedi gwneud un o'r blaen er ei fod yn ffordd rwy'n aml yn gwrando ar gerddoriaeth."
